A Tip for Beating Myrkul with Any Party. Baldur's Gate 3, Nine Hells Challenge
The Nine Hells Run Challenge:
1) Honor Difficulty
2) No long rests that restore anything (Also no restoration pods, re-speccing to restore spells, long rest potions, etc. Doing a rest for purely story advancement is fine, as long as it doesn't actually restore any hitpoints, spell slots, or other resources. Likewise re-speccing is ok as long as you waste an appropriate number of spell slots and hitpoints afterward so that you haven't gained anything)
3) No heal potions for the party (And no Elixir of Half-Elven Healing or other potions that act like super healing potions)
4) Fight every enemy, the hard way! (Resolve every encounter with combat, seek out and fight every available enemy in every area. No using dialogue options to divide-and-conquer enemy forces and turn them against each other, fight the hardest possible groupings of enemies together
5) No reviving dead party members
6) Camp party members don't help (No having party members in camp cast heal spells or buffs or things like that)
7) No cheese/exploits (For example, no carrying barrels around from room to room, no abusing stealth mode for endless free hits with the enemy being totally unable to respond)
8) No wrong class/level scrolls (Can't cast from a scroll unless it's on your class spell list, and you have a spell slot of appropriate level, like in 5E)
9) No save-scumming

Deathless Age of Mythology Retold! Chapter 1: Omens
How do you have so much cash! That's wild
@@Cerventous the cash only tells half the story. I also have an absolutely insane amount of value in scrolls and consumables that I was able to buy at fair value and could sell for fair value too, converting them back into another 50,000 or something in cash with nothing lost. Basically the key is just to know how prices work, which I talked about in a couple of videos. I only sold treasure with a character with maxed out persuasion, and only sold it to people who had 100 friendliness toward me. Thus getting the maximum amount of gold. This makes a huge difference. Likewise, I used my high persuasion character to do all the buying too. And in the early game where I couldn't max out my persuasion, I bought and sold as little as possible. Only selling enough treasure to buy things I needed immediately. Waiting until my persuasion modifier was higher.
@@Melth Impressive. I've noticed that in your videos. Mega-optimisations. I've taken a few leaves out of your book and am applying it to my own campaign. However, it seems that I've been very willy-nilly purchasing scrolls and arrows and probably won't end up using all of them! I find it hard to know what I will be needing, now I have 10 scrolls of planar binding haha and now am struggling for cash. I have really enjoyed your videos, your approach is ruthlessly efficient (when possible) and learning about the wider lore has made me enjoy the game a lot more so thanks!
@Cerventous I'm glad to hear my tips were helpful! The nice thing about extra consumable items is that, in the late game, if you can get a party member to have 15 persuasion, then you can sell those items for their fair value in gold. So if you realize you have too many of a particular scroll, nothing stops you from trading it in for gold or buying another more useful scroll or something with no money lost. To get to 15 persuasion, you'll want expertise (8), the ring of geniality you can buy from Barcus (1), and then usually a Cha modifier of +6 (attainable in act 2 with the Shar blessing or in act 3 with the hat called Birthright from Sorcerous Sundries or with the Shar mirror bonus or with Ulder Ravengard's sword.
Love your attention to detail when adjusting the approval rating of the game as you experience and explain it, can't wait for more!
Have you thought about writing tabletop rpg book? I believe you could create very good game.
@@HopTabletop thank you! I kind of did. I made a majorly reworked version of d&d 3.5 that redid all the classes and a lot of other rules. A lot of the players from my games liked it enough to start running my system for their own campaigns
As an additional thought: I'd been considering making a series on this channel about GMing advice and other tabletop stuff. The big obstacle is that although I have audio things I could talk about, I hadn't been sure what to actually fill the video with if I tried that
@@Melth You could talk about potential. Tips and Tricks for the gm, Also, certain equipment For Audio And video equipment. You could also make short stories Based around dnd, but not actually having a game just telling a story.
@@Melth Also you Could with ReStream Have your UA-cam channel connected with Your twitch channel so you could stream Live tabletop games, that Doesn't necessarily have to be strictly dnd.
@@Melth You could also have like 1 day a Is weak of story tutorials to make other people's sessions better for their campaigns.
Love this! I’ve played this game for hundreds of hours through the years and it’s so fun to watch a play through by someone who is as invested as myself. Made my night !
Thanks! It's nice to know some people enjoy my playthroughs of less famous games like this one too
4:59 "This is a cool scene, though." Don't get me wrong, it IS a cool scene... [potentally scene-ruining observation below] . . . ...but I can't take it as seriously anymore after someone referred to it as a Power Ranger cosplay. 😂
@@Etamalgren I haven't seen power rangers, but this IS basically how I always pictured it being
Awesome video as usual!
@@maelstrrom2824 thank you!
Love the elevator music!! This playthrough has been a blast, glad I finally caught up on all of it. Can't wait for more episodes!
@@deandoubek3075 "love the elevator music" is certainly a rare quote! 😆 I'm glad you're enjoying the series so much! Today I'm working on my act 3 build video
Literal god vs guy with enough summons to be considered a general and more buffs than health points
We really out-necromancied Myrkul here with all these summons!
I saw the brain depicted in the sky above moonrise spurring on the army more of an artistic representation of its voice and will in their minds, not actually floating around plain for all to see. It likely moved to Baldurs Gate underwater by sea, into the caves connected to the ocean below the sewers. I think you could take off one disapprove :D
So I’ve always wondered this about kethric shield. A huge benefit of dual wielding staves is to get bonus DC right? There are different items I feel can really benefit certain builds, but doesn’t the shield essentially cover the benefits of most second staves saving you a feat to use it? Just curious!!
The shield definitely has some value for that reason. But act 3 is coming up, and act 3 has some staves that are WAY better than just granting +1 to spell DC. For example, Mystic Carrion's staff that can let you spam out Circle of Death for free. Ketheric's shield gives +1 AC compared to dual wielding and saves you a feat, but you don't get the potentially massive perks of dual wielding some of the crazy act 3 weapons. Meanwhile, I think there are some other shields that are just better overall anyway. So in my opinion, Ketheric's shield is decent but not great. There are certainly parties and characters for whom it is a good choice, but probably not the majority of parties or characters. And that's good design! It's healthy if many items are good for SOME parties and few items are good for ALL parties
I love that you have so many, valid, criticisms of this game, particularly the conversations and the lore. Even though, or perhaps because, this is one of your favourite games.
You crushed that sorry Myrkul avatar like a bug! With such a well prepared party, that looked almost like bullying a cripple. Well done!
@@konferansjer really showed Ketheric why he shouldn't have mistaken a quasi-deity for a real god!
Thinking about how big act 3 is, both in map area and in number of combats, I’d guess it might take as many videos as it has so far just for act 3 alone I’m very anxious and curious to see how you’ll manage resources during the whole of the act
It'll be tricky! But on the other hand, my party is very strong now. I think I can do it. Hopefully some battles going faster than they did in act 1 will cut down on the time required, but we'll see
@@Melth oh, don't get me wrong, you can definitely do it! especially considering some of the items and ilithid powers you can get in act 3, improving your mobility, giving you extra spells and summons your party will surely be spectacularly powerful and it will be a blast to watch you blast everything in your Dark path
Lawful Useless vs. Chaotic Stupid -brilliant!
So the answer to stonemason's basement fight was to run forward, something I was afraid of doing for some reason, silly me. Now I see clearly it's not an ambush.
I was confused by it when I first played through the area, but just charging in with lights makes it easy
If you look across possible scenarios, Ketheric will tadpole Isobel when she is given to him. So I'd argue that he is too far gone for redemption.
Yeah, that's pretty insane on his part! He must have 110% confidence that the brain will absolutely never escape control. Gortash at least recognizes the risk
it is hilarious that youre struggling with the pathfinding more than the fights at this stage LOL
5:05 i get power ranger vibes when i see that scene XD
I haven't seen power rangers, but that scene is basically how I imagine power rangers being. And then some giant robots or something probably
*praying that Melth betrays Aylin in act 3*
@@voon1032 I think it's less a betrayal and more the consequences of her actions finally catching up to her! Yes, I plan to side against her. I'm hoping to also find a way to battle Lorroakan at the same time, but I don't know a way to do that yet
Fuck yeah! Melth movie just dropped! 2:30 I think the brain is playing dumb, since it wants to be free and you're it's best chance at it. 18:23 Seriously considering entangling Aylin to minimize the damage she can do is too real. She really is the Orin of the good side. 22:56 Bhaalista being aware of what a clown setting the Forgotten Realms is is probably my favorite running gag. Right behind Bhaalista being aware of how clownish both his allies and enemies are. 31:00 It's a lot funnier to imagine that half of your commentary is Bhaalista speaking out loud (and the other half are his thoughts). His expressions sync up pretty well with your words in this scene especially. 34:55 IIRC, they put the crown on the brain upside down, so that instead of dominating others, it gets dominated. I can't find where in the game this is said just from looking it up, so I might be inventing fake memories, but it feels silly enough to be real. 36:05 To be fair, you do have Withers/Jergal helping you. He just has to pretend that it's a monetary transaction. I guess none of the other gods are smart enough to find loopholes like that. Gods seem to not be allowed to actually step in, but they can grant boons and such. Myrkul and his avatar are about the most interference we see, but he's a quasi-deity so Ao is more lenient, and he's technically just giving Ketheric a powerup. The whole cosmology of D&D is dumb and not conducive to good storytelling, but I think Larian worked with it as well as they possibly could have. 48:30 I assume she (and any other drow Tav) is immune to sun for the same reason Astarion is. SPF Tadpole.
Great content! It will be informative how you do Act 3 and it's story and /or side stories ? I feel you broke dark urge quest, by not killing the Isabel ,at butler request , to get slayer form!? That might affect you relation to your father, who will eventually forgive you if you you follow / make the dark urge story line more. Shar works with Absolute, then they split, and finally she wants to destroy the Last Light Inn Seluna protection and kill everyone including Kathric (absolute's allay) daughter Isabel . I usually solve the divine problem by killing Aylin (myself or by Shadowheart) . Yes you can blind Myrkul with darkness, it is quite useful. Jahira will be protect / watch your dreams in Act 3, quite creepy. Act 3 will be interesting !
The Tip? Have dozens of summons and then randomly throw attacks and hope it sticks? Not sure we learned anything here.
No, the crucial tip is: Don't kill Ketheric until either AFTER his turn or right at the beginning of a new round when your whole team is ready to go. If you kill Ketheric toward the end of your turn, you won't usually have enough firepower to take out Myrkul, and then Myrkul gets to clobber you. But if you wait a round and then finish Ketheric when you're fresh, you can wreck Myrkul before Myrkul gets a turn.
I believe she does break her Oath in Loraken's tower. She grips her chest much like a PC paladin does right after breaking their oath
Hm, I don't remember that. If so, that would get a Melth Approves from me when I get there
Are you planning on doing a 'how to hit level 11 in act 2' video as a follow up to your level 8 one?
Yes, though gathering all the footage for it sounds tricky
Out of curiosity, is there a reason you didn't have two ice mephits following Minthara around this act? Conjure Minor Elemental always seemed to me the 2nd or 3rd best use of a fourth-level spell slot, on par with the skeletons.
I definitely thought about it. They're incredibly good if you happen to get an early drop of a scroll of Conjure Minor Elemental in act 1. But the trouble is 1) They have TERRIBLE initiative and would thus never get a turn 2) They're fragile, and if they die then they would explode and injure my own team. I decided that the risk of them dying and exploding half my skeletons was not worthwhile when they would never even get to attack in 95% of battles.
Hell yeah another Melth video. I just did this fight on honor the first time an hour ago ago. I am so done with Aylin's shit. I rescued her every playthrough, let her be all weird about it, and in this fight she attacks me for some reason??? She wasn't even hostile!!! She was listed as "green". I never did AoE so I couldn't have hit her, and she just decided to Abjure Enemy: Slow me, then stand in her own moonbeam, and not hit Kethric. She's our teams Orin. Absolutely useless. In my next play through I am having SH kill her than giving her away to her freak Shar worshippers. Done with these crazy violent people.
Are you going to hand off Aylin to Lorroakan in act 3?
i hope. i hate aylin at this point. just did this fight on my challenge run and she randomly decided to attack me midfight? then after we won she acts like it was all because of her. (she did nothing but walk into her own moonbeams). no wonder she keeps getting kidnapped.
@ typical Aylin! Yes, I'll be handing over Aylin. However, I'm hoping to find some way to fight both Aylin and Lorroakan at the same time to have a harder fight. Haven't found a way to make that work yet
@@Melth You can side with Lorroakan but when the fight starts just attack him, I guess? But that kinda defeats the purpose, this way you get no allies from Nightsong questline. Also if you side with Lorroakan and he dies in battle but Rolan survives, there will be unique outcome (I saw on UA-cam)
@@cannyvalley8522I do kind of enjoy that unique Rolan outcome! I found that too while trying to fight both Aylin and Lorroakan. Sadly, Aylin will then murder both Rolan AND his siblings off screen and there's nothing you can do to save them Anyway, just killing Lorroakan while he's my 'ally' does kinda work, but he won't fight back so it doesn't feel fair
In fairness the balance between the interference of the evil gods and the assists from the good gods looks a lot more even when you remember you have an avatar of one of them in your camp who gives you unlimited true resurrections
Jergal is barely willing to clean up HIS mess that he is 100% responsible though. This whole thing with the Dead 3, who have caused multiple catastrophes in the setting, is on him for irresponsibly and lazily giving them his powers. Also he's an evil or at best neutral god himself. One point I will acknowledge there though is that Jergal is only helping because Helm compels him to help. So Helm did a little bit to help. Indirectly. Very, very indirectly.
it's funny how you get way more information from books etc. than the characters are supposed to know. i don't think Karlach would be that dumb. the nightsong on the other hand... no defence for that. crazy how overpowered you are! how you handled Kethric was unique.
I think it's sort of only 'canon' that we read orange quest books. But that's weird and silly. They put books out in plain sight that spell out the whole plot, but then our characters get surprised by it because the book isn't orange. It just makes no sense and really gets in the way of RP sometimes
@@Melth that is indeed annoying.
Sunday just got better!
Thanks, I hope you like the video!
4:15 one interpretation I've seen of this for why Ketheric would be scared could be that while he's no doubt harder to kill, he and Orin are on a similar level of strength or there's a chance Orin is stronger. If he can still feel pain (basically the whole thing hinges on this) getting hurt by a goblin which you know you'll easily kill is all fun and games but against someone who could possibly restrain of incapacitate him immortality would just mean that the torturer has to be far less careful.
She doesn't seem to have her unstoppable stacks there, so I'd put my money on Papa K XD
ketheric's armor or shield has a feature that makes it so he can't be moved by force, so you can't take advantage of the platforms and falling heights to damage or kill him
Doesn't that only apply as an actively used feature of the armor? "Reaper's Rigidity" I think it's called
@ yeah, after you beat him we saw that feature in the armor that you need to activate. Next time I fight him, I’ll “Examine” him and check to see if that feature is active If it isn’t, I’ll try throwing him in the pit to make sure if he can’t be moved
This fight with Myrkul can only mean one thing: next challenge must be a solo run ;)
I'd love to see this as well
Me too, that would be awesome to watch!
I managed to complete it once with the thief - gloomstalker combo and the glitched shadow blade. And Myrkul was by far the most stressful part.
I think my next run (unless the new subclasses change my mind) will be... a Merregon Mask run. I don't think I've ever seen someone do one of those. It'll be a huge change to have all my party members be Str builds and do a lot of melee and very little spellcasting.
Orin definitely chose that elevator music.
Undoubtedly! The Dark Urge would probably have gone with something like Raining Blood
The elevator music absolutely killed me haha this run has been very fun to watch
Thank you, I'm glad you liked that!
1:54 LMAO. It would be hilarious if the game had elevator music. This reminds me of the best things I have seen games do with music. This game did one of the best music moments in any video game with Raphael's VA singing during his boss battle. Another good one is in an old Sega Genesis JRPG Phantasy Star III where one of the game's themes adds instruments to the composition as you gain party members.
That sounds like a neat idea in Phantasy Star III, with more characters represented with more instruments. I think I tried to play one of the Phantasy Star games as a kid, but it came as a pack with other games and had no instructions. And I'd never heard of it and had 0 knowledge of RPGs at the time, so it was too confusing to get into.
I can NOT believe this timing, I just got my food ready and here's literally the best possible video for it. Something 's happening out there...
Enjoy!
Great Nine Hells run. Which kind of run are you going to do after?
I had a fun idea for my next run I think: Everyone will be a Strength build and wear a Merregon Mask to cripple our casting abilities. Should feel very different from this run! I'm not sure exactly what challenges I'll include. I think I'll try to fight everything and do few or no rests, but I haven't decided on the details
Any advice for level 10 before Kethric first fight? I think you've made it further. I'm at like 9.25 I'd say. Lot of fun 8+2 multiclasses (8+3 is even better but I can't imagine getting their before myrkul). I haven't blown up the Zhent (but I don't care for them at all). The mycononids creep me out so I don't mind that either (but I don't want to lose Derryth...).Did BOOAL. But fucked up some stuff here. BG3 has kind of weird leveling though right? If I go back at L9 to murder the Zhents, I think you get very little for it? Or am I wrong? Does killing neutrals even give XP? Like I talked the Thorms to death and then some of the followers gave XP and some didn''t? Why??? Also im just rambling now but considering the harpers manage to die somehow even if you clear moonrise on your own, I wish I could just kill them for the XP.
Getting to level 10 before Ketheric is fairly easy if you were at or close to level 8 in act 1. Just play thoroughly in the Shadow-Cursed Lands and when you're in the gauntlet of Shar, make sure to let the maximum number of undead Dark Justiciars spawn out of their portals. Also, attack Moonrise BEFORE going into the Shadowfell. Kill everything in Moonrise yourself. Once the harper attack begins, tons of the enemy are just instantly dead on the bridge, robbing you of XP. The tricky thing is getting to level 11 before the Myrkul fight. As for your question about BG3's leveling up and XP in general: No, going back to easy areas at high level does NOT decrease how much XP you get. Any given creature always provides *exactly* the same amount of XP under all circumstances. Your level doesn't matter. The only thing your level affects is that if you are higher level, you get MORE XP from exploring new areas. It also doesn't matter if the creature is an enemy or neutral, if you do the kill then you get the XP. As for the harpers, you *can* kill them for XP. Though I won't do so on my run because I don't think it makes RP sense. You can also save all of the harpers if you slaughter absolutely every enemy in Moonrise before freeing Aylin.
What are katlach and mintharas summons?
@@356z they both have a raven, 3 skeletons (from level 4 animate dead), and an air elemental (imo, the best of the level 5 elementals). Then Minthara also has a dryad which summoned a wood woad
@Melth ah ok thanks!
Game volume seems a bit loud in this video, compared to your voice. Nice video though :)
Hm, thanks for the feedback. I'm not sure why the volume would be different since I think I remember making the same adjustments to it that I usually do
Really nice to get an hourlong episode!
Thanks, I'm glad you like it
Continue this series. Your gameplay are the best
Titanstring bow overrated? Meanwhile morgana is doing 200 damage in a hit off it 😂
Wtf is on your chin?? Part of the fun of this game is leveling up... while i want to do it quick, we still spend so much time at max level in act 3 and i like having a level up to look forward to. No need to rush, especially if you do all the quests
That's my beard. It naturally grows in two different colors
I've been so enjoying your content, but did not expect to discover a fellow Aylin hater.
She's absolutely the worst!
27:50 for a moment I thought that was YOU laughing hahaha
I can understand why! It's so weird having his mouth suddenly not move for that laugh
I like the Braindrain gloves, they're useful for when you really want to CC an enemy with certain spells. Combined with arcane acuity and phalar aluve: shriek you can pretty much ignore legendary resistance. The Dark Urge scenes in this area made me prefer that character over "Tav", too bad the bug is still affecting this run.
The brain drain glove effect IS pretty good for landing crucial saving throws- but the trouble is that we actually got a pair of gloves back in act 1 which is slightly better if you're just doing one attack, or we could focus on inflicting Daze via the ring that does that, and so on. I just don't think the brain drain gloves, with their tighter conditions and requiring multiple attacks to outperform, are worth it in comparison on any of my builds
